World Bank Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, Camilla Holmemo, recently visited Liberia to engage with key stakeholders and assess the progress of the REALISE Project, which is aimed at improving livelihoods and strengthening resilience in the country.
During her visit, Madam Holmemo participated in several important meetings, including the official opening of the REALISE Project’s Midterm Review. In her remarks at the opening ceremony, she expressed her gratitude to the government of Liberia for its continued support to the project, which is currently benefiting over 50,000 people across 14 counties. She acknowledged the positive impact of the initiative in enhancing economic opportunities, promoting social development, and building resilience within local communities.
Additionally, Madam Holmemo spent two days at the Project’s offices, where she engaged with project staff and local partners. In these discussions, she emphasized the urgent need to scale up the project in order to reach more beneficiaries, particularly in underserved regions based on fragility. She noted that expanding the project would help address the growing demand for support in communities that are still facing significant challenges
The visit underscored the World Bank’s continued commitment to supporting Liberia’s development and its partnership with the government in achieving sustainable growth and poverty reduction. Holmemo’s call for the expansion of the REALISE Project reflects a broader strategy to enhance the impact of World Bank-supported programs in the region, ensuring that they have a transformative and lasting effect on the lives of vulnerable populations.
Profile of Camilla Holmemo
Camilla Holmemo is the World Bank’s Practice Manager for Social Protection and Jobs in West and Central Africa, leading the Bank’s engagement on social protection and jobs in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea. Prior to this, she was the World Bank’s Practice Leader for Human Development in India, where she coordinated and led the World Bank’s largest human development work program on health, education and social protection in the world, and the Human Development Practice Leader for Indonesia and Timor Leste, based in Jakarta. She has held leadership positions in strategic, policy and operational work on social protection and human development based in Addis Ababa, Manila and Washington, DC and worked in a number of countries in South and East Asia and Africa. Camilla holds an M.A in International Economics from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies and a B.A. in Economics and Russian from the University of Oslo, Norway.
