5,000 jobs for Montserrado and Margibi Counties….REALISE launches round three for Labor Intensive Public Work component

Monrovia, June 17, 2024 – Component 2 (Labor Intensive Public Works-LIPW) of the Recovery of Economic Activity for Liberian Informal Sector Employment (REALISE) Project has launched round 3 of recruitment for beneficiaries in 50 communities across Montserrado and Margibi Counties. The recruitment aims to engage five thousand unskilled and vulnerable workers with temporary employment over the next six months.

Beneficiaries will receive life-skills training, labor subsidies for their employment, and tools necessary for project activities. These tools will remain with the communities after the project concludes.

Forty communities in Montserrado County will benefit from the project, with one hundred households from each, totaling four thousand. At the same time, one thousand households from ten communities will benefit in Margibi County.

Anita Marshall, Acting Deputy Project Coordinator for Economic Inclusion and lead for LIPW, expressed enthusiasm about the inclusion of new beneficiaries. She stated, “These individuals will contribute to their communities through various activities.”

“Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to select their preferred subprojects, which have previously included tasks such as sanitation, street naming, home coding, and adult literacy,” Anita added.

Marshall encouraged residents of selected communities to actively participate in or observe the recruitment process. “We urge residents to participate in large numbers and engage with the process.”

Recruitment is conducted through an open lottery following a period of general registration among mobilized community residents.

Under the LIPW component, the project aims to recruit a total of 17,000 targeted beneficiaries over six rounds for temporary employment through labor-intensive public works, thereby enhancing community well-being. Each implementation round spans six months, beginning with the formation of beneficiary working groups.

At the end of each six-month cycle, beneficiaries will retain personal protective gear (such as rain boots, raincoat, hand gloves, and reflective jackets), while tools and other exchangeable equipment (including shovels, cutlasses, spraying cans, wheelbarrows, rakes, diggers, files, brooms, whippers, etc.) will remain with the communities.

The REALISE Project is funded by the World Bank, French Development Agency, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, and the government of Liberia. It is implemented in collaboration with the Ministries of Youth and Sports, Gender Children and Social Protection, and the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE).
